Wrinkles and fine lines are common indicators of aging, influenced by genetics and environmental factors. If you’re seeking solutions to combat these aging signs, you’ve likely researched various wrinkle relaxers that can help minimize them. At Houston Laser Skin Center in Northwest Harris County, you’ll find the expertise of Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Solomon Brickman and his team, who specialize in cosmetic skin care. They can effectively address those bothersome lines and wrinkles.
With available laser wrinkle removal options such as Forever Young BBL by Sciton®, you can achieve a rested, refreshed, and natural appearance. These treatments not only reduce existing wrinkles but also serve as a preventive measure against future ones.
How do fine lines and wrinkles form?
The skin comprises three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue, each contributing to the firmness and smoothness of our skin from birth. The outermost layer, the epidermis, is safeguarded against environmental toxins by special cells called keratinocytes. Beneath it lies the dermis layer, housing connective tissue like collagen and elastin, which provide strength and flexibility to the skin. The subcutaneous tissue at the bottom consists of fat cells that offer insulation and fullness to the skin.
As we age, genetics and environmental influences cause the thinning and sagging of these skin layers. The production of essential tissue slows down, resulting in diminished support and repair capabilities. Consequently, the skin becomes thinner, with visible lines and wrinkles that can no longer be filled in by collagen and fat cells.
What actually causes fine lines and wrinkles?
Wrinkles and fine lines stem from several factors—some of which are beyond your control. As part of the natural aging process, the skin loses its thickness and elasticity. This ultimately leads to the formation of lines and creases, typically around the eyes, forehead, and mouth corners. Additionally, repeated muscle contractions over the years also known contributors to the development of wrinkles. Moreover, you may be more susceptible to line and wrinkle development due to your genetic disposition.
Environmental factors, such as excessive and prolonged exposure to harmful elements (i.e., ultraviolet light from the sun, artificial tanning), can significantly accelerate premature aging. These elements will break down collagen and elastin fibers, weakening the skin and causing the development of wrinkles and other signs of aging. In fact, up to 90 percent of premature skin aging is attributed to photoaging.
If you smoke, you increase the chances of severe lines and wrinkles developing as smoking alters your blood supply. Poor blood circulation into your skin will cause collagen and elastin fibers to deteriorate as well.
